Your Questions About Dog Training

David asks…

selling a true story worldwide?

I have written a true story about two blind people who I am proud to say were my parents. The story starts in Northamptonshire, United Kingdom and begins in the late forties. Laura has left a boarding school for the blind well educated but lonely. Little is expected of her. Father is strict . Mother protective. She meets and falls in love with a young man who has recently lost his sight. His family in Coventry love him and so wish to take care of him. He has other ideas. He leaves home and is determined to lead an independent life. He settles in London. Finds digs with a land-lady and begins work as a telephonist.

Shortly after he meets Laura on a telephonist training course at a seaside town and fall in love. Neither his or her family approve of their relationship or of their later plans to marry. Laura elopes from Northamptonshire and they marry, with neither set of family present, at a Registry Office in London.

They find a newly built council house in Swindon Close, Harold Hill Romford Essex and everything seems set well for them both. Their family grows and contentment reigns. James works as a telephonist in Chelmsford whilst Laura remains at home to rear their children. Normal happy family experiences follow over the next eight years. Seaside trips to Southend. Visits to family follow.
Then the unthinkable follows. James dies suddenly aged thirty six.

She returns to her parents town in Northamptonshire taking her three children with her. In a state of loss and depression she forms a friendship with another blind man after communicating with him as a penfriend. He is sixteen years older than her. He is cruel and controlling. A Alcholic who drags them all into a world of fear, loss and judgment whilst the swinging sixties move on. He beats his guide dog on a daily basis and they lose heating as well as any self respect and so the battles continue

Training Expert answers:

Wow. I just want to read on and I’m struck by the fact this actually happened. You must sell this story. Get it proof read before approaching publishers (I learnt that from an author I met in high school) and try to get a few reviews from book groups to see if it’s worth it. Remember you only get one first impression. Good luck.

Some jokes for ya’ll ?

A battle weary American soldier boarded a crowded train in in London during the early days of post-WWII, only to discover he was unable to find a place to sit. As he walked the length of the train, he noticed a small white dog curled up on one of the seats. A large, well dressed woman sat in the seat next to the dog. The man hovered near the seat, hoping the woman would take the hint, but she pointedly ignored him.

“Excuse me, Ma’am,” the soldier finally spoke, “Is this your dog? Would you mind holding it on your lap so that I may sit down?”

The woman raised her icy gaze to the young man and said in a haughty British accent, “oh! You Americans. You are so rude.
Fluffy is in that seat, and i see no reason why she should give up her comfort for you.”

The exhausted soldier nodded, picked up the small dog … leaned over … opened the window of the moving train and tossed the dog out. The woman gaped and spluttered in horrified indignation, and the man sitting across from her lowered his newspaper.

“You Americans”, he said, “You drive on the wrong side of the road … you eat with the wrong fork … and you just threw the wrong bitch out the window.”

A well-stacked young advertising secretary wore tight knit dresses that showed off her figure, especially when she walked. Her young, aggressive boss motioned her into his office one afternoon and closed the door.

Pointing to her tightly covered derriere, he asked, “Is that for sale?”

“Of course not!” she snapped angrily, blushing furiously.

Unchanged, he replied quietly, “Then, I suggest you quit advertising it.”

Training Expert answers:

I got a GREAT joke:

There once was a pair of twins, Bill and Bob, they’re identicle. So one day, Bill’s boat broke and Bob’s wife died on the same day. Old lady, Ms Johnson walked up to Bill, thinking that he was Bob and said “I am sorry that she’s gone”. Bill had thought that she was talking about his boat and said “Oh no, not at all, I never liked her anyway. I have rided on top of her so many times that there was a little hole on the bottom. The hole kept getting bigger and bigger as i used and rided on her more. Then i lent her to a few friends. The 4 idiots tried to use her all 4 at the same time, soon the hole became more like a crater. So thats why i had to get rid of her”
Ms Johnson fainted

This first and second was funny, the third was not. Its a stupid “joke” whether if its canto or mandirin, i think its got stereotype….

Time and Again is a good read, but a slow starter.
I’m not much of a Grisham fan, but of the 3 listed, I enjoyed The Firm the most.
The Call of the Wild is an excellent classic adventure story.
Tomorrow, When the War Began is a great young adult series, but as an adult, I found it a little predictable.

Of the biographies, I’ve read They Cage the Animals at Night, The Education of Little Tree, Death Be Not Proud and Into Thin Air. All of them were very good reads. The Education of Little Tree was actually written by a man who was an avid opponent of the civil rights movement which sort of goes against the whole message of the book. Still an excellent read. Death Be Not Proud was my favorite of those I’ve read.

A Death in the Family is also a very good read.

You’d probably get more responses if you didn’t cut and paste the entire list from the CCHS website. Pull out just the titles and authors and ask opinions on them. It was a bit difficult to sort through the summaries to find just the titles.

Donna asks…

Labrador puppy owners/breeders advice please?

My friends are planning to purchase 2 Labrador puppies (same age but not same litter) and I think it’s a really bad idea. Am I worrying unnecessarily or should I continue to try to talk them out of it?

My friends live in a garden flat in North London and both work full-time in central London 1/2hr away. They intend to leave the puppies in the garden (with food, water, toys and shelter) while they’re at work, and either come home at lunchtimes for a short time or hire a dog walker for an hour a day. But for most of the time the puppies will be unsupervised.

As they grow older (bigger) the idea is that the dogs will also sleep in the garden.

Of course, when my friends are home, they will play with, care for and try to train the puppies. Their intentions are good. But neither has any experience of big dogs let alone 2 and I think they’re soon going to end up with 2 seriously screwed-up dogs in need of re-homing.

Am I right to be concerned, or worrying about nothing?

Thanks

You are right to be concerned. Two of the best trainers around agree with you (see below).

Charles asks…

Am I going about this the right way? Anything else I should be doing?

Evening all,

Currently, I’m working towards adding to my resume. As long as I’m able to do what I love, I grab whatever opportunity comes my way (and have been doing so for some time) from a part in a film directed my media friends, to school plays, or theatre group productions, etc. although my ambition is to be a screen actress, I do truly love performing in any setting.

I truly love and enjoy acting, so for my parts not only to improve my skills and experience but to also add to my resume (and hopefully helps with it’s strength so to speak) is an added bonus.

Of course my head is not in the clouds and I know that the chances of ever fulfilling my lifelong ambition and dream are slim – but I am in this for the right reasons – to be able to put my love and soul into acting – I don’t care for fame or appearing in magazines everyday. I know a career in this business isn’t glamorous… no matter what people seem to think. My heart is in the right place, and someone once told me to never EVER give up on something you can’t go a day without thinking about, and if It means I die trying at least I can say, I TRIED. You never know when your at the right place at the right time. I don’t plan on not doing anything about this passion and then looking back in 20 years time, wondering why I didn’t even try.

You don’t get to do what you love by sitting and waiting, great things happen to those who WORK HARD to make things happen. And I’m prepared to continue to work hard, to never give up.

I want to be able to give the very best that I can give, and this is done by getting out there and acting. Experience is the best teacher. I’m always on the look out for the opportunity to grow my skills. I also train so hopefully one day I will be able to reach my full potential.

I’m 18 in a few months and I’m applying for Uni, and I’m not looking for an agent at this moment. I work – so I’ll be able to pay for the expenses of travelling to auditions etc – and luckily live 30minutes from London and will be living in London soon. But I have always had to share this passion with my education and it has always been important to me to continue with my further education – I have a great passion for the English Language and social sciences.

I sing and dance also – and take lessons to train my skills. I will like to start participating in a few ‘stunt work’ workshops and do have a couple of hobbies that, hypothetically speaking, could come in handy – horse riding, skydiving and sled dog ‘mushing’ : )

QUESTION : Am I going about this the right way? Anything else I’m missing or should be doing?

Have a good day all.
