Your Questions About Dog Training

Steven asks…
I am looking for an in-house dog training school. Drop her off pick her up when trained in Michigan?

Training Expert answers:
Drop her off at a rescue instead. You really shouldn’t have a dog.

“Castle Laws” in Michigan?
There have been a fair number of break-ins in my neighborhood over the last few months. My house is secure (doors always locked, windows on main floor locked when not at home/at night, cars locked all the time, motion sensor light on detached garage) but in case something happens we want to be ready. There are 3 of us at home, my father is 50, my mother is 53, and I am 17. My dad works nights (6 PM to 6 AM) and my mom works days as a teacher and I’m at school, so there’s almost always someone at home around the clock. We have a dog as well, she is an Australian Shepard mix with a very nasty temper–if anyone or anything walks in sight she will bare her teeth and snarl and bark and lunge, so if anyone does come on our property (standard “city” lot) she will alert us. Because my dad’s gone at night and my mom is getting older, I need to protect her if/when something happens. What are the “Castle Laws” (whether or not you are absolved of murder/manslaughter if you shoot an intruder in your home) in Michigan? If the dog barks or snarls I wake up instantly (she’s VERY loud), and I have absolutely no problem shooting anyone who comes into my house bearing a weapon or trespassing on my property in a dangerous/criminal manner. If I can see that they have a weapon I will shoot to kill, if they do not I will shoot to wound (I honestly don’t give a flying f*** if they get hurt). What are the laws regarding this? In case something does happen I don’t want to go to prison for protecting my family. We do have 4 guns in the house (12 gauge shotgun, 2 rifles of different calibers, and a pistol) all locked in the gunsafe with the ammo stored separately, but we are considering possibly changing that so we could get to it quickly in an issue but still have it be stored safely. What are the castle laws in Michigan? I will not hesitate to protect my family and my home.
I have taken gun safety and hunter’s safety courses and am trained to shoot a gun with high accuracy and precision. I have won several target shooting competitions with guns and bows/arrows.

Training Expert answers:
Below is a link to help answer your questions on Michigan’s castle law. As to gun storage, the main issue is safety. If there are no young children in the house, and if you can rely on your friends to not touch your gun, then having a gun at hand when needed is best done by having it in an easily accessible place.
People who have received training on gun safety, and who have hunted know that guns are dangerous. But, that danger is more likely to be realized when untrained people pick up a gun. Every gun should be unloaded (including any round in the chamber) before being passed to anyone else, no matter how much they know about guns. Even after unloading, a gun should never be pointed at anyone. I realize you already know this, but I repeat it for the benefit of any other reader.

Carol asks…
how to convince my parents to let me raise a puppy for leader dogs for the blind? does anyone have connections?
i am a 14 year old girl. i really want to train a puppy from the leader dogs for the blind program in rochester hills michigan. i live quite a while from them, not even in michigan, but i think that they hold meetings in a town closer to me and i have done alot of reasearch and really like this program. the reason i want to is i am visually impared but am not even nearly blind but i still hope that this wont make it so no one will allow me to. i love dogs and would like to be a professsional dog trainer when i get older. i have alot of goals that i hope to accomplish. my vision teacher showed me some of my oppertunities with these programs knowing how much i would love to partake.
the only thing is that we have about 4 acres and they are not fenced andi am at school 9 hours 5 days a week. i dont want to lock up this dog for all of that time. also i now have 3 dogs. 1 is 6lb and 2 about 15-20lbs
one of my dogs just ran out into the road a few hours ago and was kiilled. i am the one that was most upset and still am. she was a true sweet heart and was only about 3 or 4 years old. ;’(
so can anyone help me? is it true that i can get some benefits for college too? i think that since we dont have as many dogs that there is a larger chance that she will say yes if i persuade her. also do you have any suggestions for how to work with no fence and crating? i have a grandma that lies like 4 miles away but comming over each day will add up to alot of gas and gas is expensive, please help me!i have wanted to do this forever! thanks you.
sorry for any typing errors or any kind of error. thanks again!

Charles asks…
Can a Yorkie or Maltapoo stay home for a long period of time?
I’m planning to get a puppy at the start of summer and I’m going to have everyday for 2 months to train the pup. My sister (in college) will also be taking care of it. And I’m completely aware that she’ll be gone for the rest of the school year (goes to Michigan State but I live in PA). I’ll be starting my first year of high school and I’ll be gone for 8 hours (6:50~3:00). I am planning to walk it in the morning and right when I come back from school, I will walk it again. I will take responsibility and play with the dog too. Including baths, brushing everyday, feeding it everyday, etc. I know all the responsibilities that come with a dog and I’ve done a lot of research on them. I mean A LOT, maybe even TOO much. So answer the question please! No negativity about how horrible it is. I don’t wanna hear smart remarks like “Get a stuffed animal.” BTW my family does not like cats. So don’t suggest that either.
Oh ya and I know it depends on the dog not the breed. But a Yorki, Maltapoo, or Shih Tzu are my choices. They are all, hypoallergenic, small, and (apparently) easy to train, but that part depends. Not sure about a Shih Tzu though. I love them but my sister doesn’t want one.
I can only have a dog with these traits or whatever you wanna call. My sister and I have to agree on the dog, were in this together. But yea, in general can dogs stay home for a long period of time.
And yes I have more than enough money to take care of the dog. I’ve had a shih tzu before and have asked my neighbors (they all have dogs) this same question. They said the dog will get used to the daily routine of staying home. My other neighbor said it took literally one week to train his shih tzu.

I have two Yorkshire Terriers currently (10 and 9 years old). When they were puppies we trained them to eat when they wanted to from their bowl, so when we were traveling they could eat when they chose to (they never overate or got obese). We also got them the invisible fence early on which allowed them to be outside, hunting (as yorkies are hunters by nature) and free from being cooped up.
So from my experiences, yes, yorkies can do it, although we did it a little differently.
